XENIA, Ohio Like Mark Grewing, Karen Shirk understands how hard it can be to get a service dog. Shirk suffers from a rare neuromuscular disease similar to muscular dystrophy, but she ran into roadblocks when she tried to get a dog. So in 1998, she started 4 Paws for Ability, a nonprofit agency that trains dogs to work with people whom other agencies have turned away.
